Palm trees over Maize fields

This month in Tanzania has been so very beautiful.

We have traveled a fair bit this month
and each place has been more beautiful than the last.

This is the sunset that welcomed us from Kenya to Tanzania.

This is the house where have our tents set up inside.

We went to Zanzibar to meet our squad leaders for a couple of days.
While we were there we got to see some dolphins and snorkel.

Probably the most beautiful beach I have ever seen.

We visited the village of Tawa where our Pastor this month grew up.
The worship was fabulous.

We also visited a Maasai village.
This is one of the local women.

A Maasai boy watching his cow.

A field of maize with some palm trees.
Corn fields are one of my favorite things from where I grew up.
Palm trees are one of my favorite things from where I have  live for the last 5 years.
The combination is a wonderful reminder of two places I love.

I hope you enjoyed the view as much as I did.

Stay tuned for more on Tanzania...

Establishing Dominance

I was listening to a sermon last month and the pastor said something
that caught my attention.

He said, "Every time the love of God enters a room
His presence establishes dominion there."

Usually when I think about someone establishing dominance it has to do with violence, power and often times fear.

But this statement was ALL about LOVE.

And the POWER that is in this LOVE.

This month in Tanzania my team is spending our time going house to house talking with people about this LOVE that is JESUS.

We speak through our translators because most people here don't know much, if any, English.

We are walking a lot this month to get to and from or ministry each day.

While we walk, people of all ages stare at us.

Some of them greet us in Swahili and some use the few English phrases they know to say hello.

A lot of them simply stare.
My favorite response to the stare is to smile.

I smile and keep eye contact as long as I can, hoping that they will smile back.

A lot of the time they just keep staring.

But then there are the times that they do smile back.

Sometimes these smiles are shy, like they're not sure why I am smiling at them.

Other times their smiles are some of the best I have seen.

Genuine joy fills their eyes and their face.

This is when I know that the LOVE that lives in me has 'Established Dominion.'

My prayer is that it is more than just a smile.

That the LOVE of JESUS that lives in me is truly shining through my eyes and ESTABLISHING DOMINANCE everywhere we walk.

"Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."
1 John 3:18

Faces of the Future

Walking down the street every child I see yells out "How are you?"

Or they yell "Mzungu" which means white person.

They are so beautiful and bring a smile to my face every time.

Here are a few of my favoritie Kenyan children's faces.

They are SO BEAUTIFUL!

The Power lives in you.

"Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood.
Tell them that the kingdom is here.
Bring health to the sick. Raise the dead.
Touch the untouchables. Kick out the demons.
You have been treated generously, so live generously."
Matthew 10:6-8 MSG

That is exactly what the people of Christ the King International Pentecostal Fellowship are doing and they have invited us to join them.

Last night Lana delivered the Truth of Jesus Christ very plainly at the open air revival.

There are two paths. One leads to death and one leads to life.
She explained how through Jesus we can not only have eternal life but we can also have abundant life here and now.

But, without Jesus we are headed for death.

She gave the people who were gathered a chance to choose. She made it clear that it was their choice to make and begged them to choose life.

Gina chose life.

Gina is a 26 year old woman who has been unable to hear for two years.

We began to pray.

At first we were just praying for the healing of her ears.

I prayed specifically that the pain in her ears would be gone and that whatever was blocking them would come out.

Gina can read lips, so Jeffta (one of the men from the church) began telling her exactly what we were saying.

We asked if anything had changed. Could she hear anything?
The answer was no.

At this point I was a little stumped. I knew we weren't finished but, I wasn't quite sure where to go from there. I turned to my teammate Katie and asked what the Lord was speaking to her.

Katie felt like we should make sure she understood salvation and confirm that she had indeed asked Jesus to come into her life.

Through Jeffta I asked Gina to talk to Jesus. I told her to ask Him to come into her life and take over. She did just that. She spoke directly to Jesus and said she could feel that her heart was different.

And as if that's not miracle enough, we then went back to praying for healing.

Katie asked her to close her eyes and say 'I am healed in Jesus name' 10 times. She declared healing over herself repeatedly.
She believed in her heart that Jesus was healing her ears.

She then told Jeffta that the pain in her ears was gone

The look on her face was priceless! The pain she had been experiencing before we prayed was now gone and you could see
the joy and excitement on her face.
She kept telling everyone that the pain was gone, repeating the story over and over again.

We continued talking with Gina and trying to set up a time to meet and pray with her more.

While we were talking we were asked to pray for a young girl with epilepsy. We prayed for her and had Gina pray too.

Welcome to the Kingdom, Gina. The same Power that lives in us now lives in you too and you just experienced what this Power can do.

While Gina was praying she started touching her ears a lot.
Something was dripping out of one of her ears.

Not only was her pain gone but something was coming out.

When this happened I remembered the exact words I had prayed.

I had prayed specifically that the pain in her ears would be gone and that whatever was blocking them would come out.

Those things happened.

The Jesus that lives in me used my mouth to speak this healing over Gina.

This same Jesus lives in you. And because Jesus lives in you, the power to heal the sick also lives in you.

I may not have much to give in the form of money or things.

But what I do have - the LOVE and TRUTH of Jesus Christ - brings HEALING and JOY and most importantly LIFE.

And yesterday I got to give that away.

Gina now has life and someday soon she will have her hearing back too.

PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD!

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
John 10:10

One of those days

There are some days on this trip where I don't know what to do with myself.

I have fallen in love with this traveling for Jesus life.

And Jesus has given me a crazy love for my teammates.

Then come the days that the internet that has worked for everyone else not only stops working for me but causes my computer to freeze in the process.

But still most days I don't want to even think about going home.

And then there are days like today when I would rather go home than do almost anything else.

I'm frustrated with the slowness of things and the flies that won't leave me alone.

I'm just sitting here trying to spend some time with Jesus and my team leader asks me to go door to door with her for an hour to pray with the people in the community.

I want to ask her to get someone else.  But, I know that I need to get up and go.

So we go.

As we go, it starts to rain and I'm reminded of the day in New Zealand when we were tramping and it started to rain and my attitude plain stunk.

Jesus gave me a rainbow that day to remind me of His love for me and I remember saying 'Ok. Yes, you are worth it.  Jesus you are worth it.'

I declared that He was worth any amount of rain on my face.

And today as we were walking in the rain, again, I made myself declare it again.

Jesus, you are worth it!

As we went from house to house today we escaped the worst of the rain and were able to pray and encourage several women.

Every time it would start to rain harder we would go in a house and when we were ready to leave the rain had slowed down.

Even though my attitude stunk once again Jesus was faithful.

So, let me say it again, if only to remind myself, JESUS YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Rain on my face, dirt in my toes, especially then, You are worth it.

A Handful of Cashews

The list of comforts that I used to consider 'normal' have been slowly disappearing from my life since leaving home.

It just becomes the new normal and we keep living life.

And the little comforts become so much more appreciated.

We laugh about the things we do now that we would never have done before.

And simple things bring me much more joy than I ever thought possible.

A few nights ago, Lana walked over to me and took my hand as worship was beginning.

I thought she was just saying hello.  She was actually bringing me a handful of cashews.

Cashews are one of my favorite snacks and I always had them in my house.

I'm not sure I've had one since I left home.

This small handful of cashews was one of the best gifts I have received in a long time.

What a treat!  Thanks, Lana!

My teammates and I have come up with this, by no means all inclusive, list of things you would never do at home, but have become perfectly normal on the race.

-duck tape your disposable razor back together because you don't want to/can't find another one

-use the rain water off your tent to "wash" your hands

-super glue your one dollar sun glasses

-eat things off the floor

-your food has ants on it...you brush of the ants and eat it anyway

-eat the same thing for 18 meals in a row

-clean yourself with a baby wipe and call it a shower

   - share a bathroom with bats

-call the shirt you only wear on Sundays your 'fancy shirt'

-get super excited about cookies that are only slightly stale

-use your pants and/or shirt as a napkin and still consider them clean enough to wear again several times

Who knows, maybe they will stay normal for the rest of my life???

Guns, prisoners and chickens

Last week I got on a bus headed to Mpeketoni, Kenya.

I had been told a lot of things about buses in Africa, but still didn't really know what to expect.

The only thing I knew for sure was that this bus ride would last a minimum of 12 hours.

In reality this bus ride from Nairobi to Mpeketoni took about 14 hours and was full of all kinds of crazy things.

Not only did the bus provide us with the long distance transportation we needed, it also provided local transportation for the people who live along the way.

The bus stopped often and lots of people got on and off and I enjoyed seeing the different people and things get on and off.

Waking up from one of the many naps I was so thankful for, I looked across the aisle to see a man with a pretty large gun.

Please don't worry, he was a soldier and they apparently ride these buses all the time.

Soon after that we stopped again and a prisoner of some kind was escorted on the bus. Once again nothing to be afraid of...the soldiers were already there to keep things in line J

A couple hours later, when I think I've just about seen everything that I could see on this bus, a woman gets on carrying a chicken under her arm. A live, clucking, squawking chicken.

I know I am far from seeing everything buses in Africa have to offer, but I think the guns, prisoner and chicken were a pretty good introduction to what travel for the next three months will be like.
I am super excited to finally be in Africa.

This month my team will be working with team Powerhouse at Christ the King International Pentecostal Fellowship in Mpeketoni, Kenya.

I have loved getting to know the people in this small community and I'm truly enjoying the beauty here in Kenya.

So many things have happened in the last five months and I am so thankful for your financial support that has allowed me to continue on this journey.

It flies by, drags on and sometimes feels like it's not really happening to me.

Jesus has shown me more of Himself, more of myself and more of His people than I ever imagined possible.

No matter how fast or slow the days seem to go,
God is doing some fabulous things.

And I still need your help to continue on this amazing year of learning and growing.

I am about $3,000 short of being fully supported for the rest of the year.
Please prayerfully consider supporting me financially.
